De Nationale Voorleeswedstrijd, a reading promotion project for the two highest classes of primary school, takes place in schools from September to November. Pupils read aloud for four minutes from their favourite part of a children’s book. Following a contest the school jury then chooses their winner. After that the rounds in the towns and region take place from January to March. All 12 provinces in the Netherlands then compete in a semi-final in April. By May, 70,000 competitors will have been whittled down to twelve winners, who will participate in the final contest. The overall winner can, without doubt, be called National Reading Aloud Champion.
The aim of the project is to make children enthusiastic about books and reading and to promote the fun of reading. It is a Stichting Lezen Netherlands project in cooperation with the CPNB (Collective Propaganda of Dutch Books) and the Vereniging van Openbare Bibliotheken (Association of Public Libraries).
